[DOSE] Edna St. Vincent Millay

Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution's power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.

commute 2

I am constantly consciously obsessing over physical symptoms. You know, shooting pain through my head or swirling muscle spasm in my back compounded with that weird cramp in my foot when I wake up every morning. And then there is that bump behind my ear. This morning I felt sort of dizzy and nauseas and I still had that bump behind my ear and I swear it hurt along with my throat when I woke up. I called Jonathan and explained all this to him, "Look it up", I said. He knew what I meant. It's driving me crazy. Everything is driving me crazy. every time i turn over or see the sun come up or hear a train go by in the distance as soon as I turn left on 40th I know it means the next plane overhead is dropping a bomb on the city.

If I had a television I would blame it on that.

Yesterday morning I had to wake up early to catch the train into the city to make my eight am class. I haven't been on time since the first week. There is something about the morning that always holds me up those fifteen extra minutes. I am always being held up. I cant figure out what I am doing all the time since its clearly not being where I am supposed to be at the appointed time. It must be the internet, or maybe all those billboards I have to walk by. If I spent less time on facebook and reading advertisements I'm sure I would be where I should be more often.

Back to the train though.

I love to stand in the middle of the car and look around at all the professionals in their slacks and sweaters, faces crammed in last years best sellers, and maybe one from the year before that. They have their faces in their book though, its pretty clear what they're doing. Its more intriguing to stare in the faces of those that choose to do nothing on the train. How many minutes do they spend, do you think, like that- Doing nothing. The commute to the city is 26 minutes from MacArthur, to Powell at least. If they do that commute twice a day thats 52 minutes and if you multiply that by five days in a week thats 260 minutes or 4.3 hours a week.

I suppose not much can get accomplished in 4.33 hours a week.

Maybe your chores.

You can clean the house and go grocery shopping in that time .

I suppose thats productive.

Sometimes when I am on the train and we go under the bay my throat sort of starts to close and then I notice that swirling in my back again and realize the guy next to me smells really bad and the guy with the briefcase looks sort of suspicious and start touching behind my ear. Damnnit, there goes that shooting pain. I wonder if its weird to move to a different car.

[DASH SNOW] This is the art of our generation.

Photobucket

Dash Snow was born into the circle of the elite but he lived against the grain of all social norms. He spent his 27 years creating a ruckus that few could stake claim too and from that ruckus came some of the greatest art of our generation thus far. Just a kid & his Polaroid, documenting the degradation, disgust and rebellion that we all see so clearly. He merely made it comprehensive.

What the fuck are you doing with your time here?

[MUSIC REVIEW] PlayRadioPlay!

What began as a 19 year old kid and his laptop has morphed into a full band backing major tours, numerous album releases with Island Records, and an indelible mark on the music scene. PlayRadioPlay! is Dan Hunter of Fort Worth, Texas spilling his heart into the mic and onto the stage while concocting electro-pop sounds resulting in the catchy songs that have forged his success. I cant help but think it sounds like Dashboard Confessional ("Compliment Eacother like Colors") meets Death Cab for Cutie ("Mindy's Secret Song") with parts and lines that evoke MGMT ("The Newcomer of Seven Years"), like exactly. But take that as a good thing, I thoroughly enjoy all of those bands when the time is right and I can see myself working PlayRadioPlay! into my er, playlist. Its eclectic, intriguing, dark, and emotional, bring your boy/girlfriend or just your friend and sway the night away...

[MUSIC REVIEW] Eux Autres

Brother and sister duo Nicholas and Heather Larimer along with bandmates Yoshi Nakamoto and Nevada Jones, engange in a witty french banter with vocal matter ranging from politics, to soccer, to imperialism with the just the right amount of romance and life-lessons thrown in. Eux Autres (pronounced OOZ-OH-TRA) balances their heavy lyrical content with light-hearted, nonchalant notes in compact sound form, a style which frankly makes their message easy to miss. While they are not discouraged by the fact that few people have any idea what they are talking about, please, don't call Eux Autres fun, even though they definitely are. Eux Autres "sounds like the unrequited love song Doug Martsch would have penned for Francoise Hardy, had the time/space continuum conveniently collapsed" (www.euxautres.com).

[MUSIC REVIEW] Nous Non Plus

The NYC bred sounds of Jean-Luc Retard, Celine Dijon, Bonnie Day, Cal d'Hommage, Morris "Mars"Chevrolet, Francois Hardonne, and Professeur Harry Covet are a tribute to their global roots. Hailing from everywhere- Paris, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Boston, Denver- this group plays on the American view of french-pop to create their decidedly energetic and playful style. Their two albums, 2005's "Nous Non Plus" and 2009's "Menagerie", exemplify the hard, fast beats and risque vocals of their truly French counterparts, but not with out a twist of egotistical American appeal. Nous Non Plus, making the French look ridiculous since the early nineties.

from top to bottom: free people wrap dress, free people wedge sandal, effing amazing blazer, dru new york shoes, Steven by Steve Madden bag

I feel like my closet needs a little boost lately. I am stoked on most of my clothes but I just feel like I'm lacking a few items, aka, the ones pictured above. I feel like that dress could be a GO TO dress for any occasion. The wedge sandals would get me through the summer and out of last years damn gladiators. The blazer would go with my entire closet and still has personality, something which I certainly dont lack but occasionally my clothes may, although not often. And those Dru shoes look so comfy for tramping around San Francisco all summer while still giving me A) that extra inch, and B) chic-ness. The bright blue bag just ties it all together for me, and gives at least a little variety to my black addiction. I bought a beautiful pair of shoes yesterday from No. 704 b. effing gorgeous, view them here. Maybe its all the newly free time on my hands, but I am in the mood for some shopping. I wish another tax return was in the mail.

[PIRATE] Guns & Coffee

Heres a play by play of the last 24 hours. Last night I started working on an
incredibly challenging paper for modern criticism at 9 pm. Worked till
1 am, then realized that coffee was just not cutting it and nothing
sort of saftey pins and cocaine would keep my eyes open. So I took a
nap, till 3:17 am. I woke up at 3:17 am and forced myself to lie in bed
for 40 minutes, stressing about the paper the whole time. At 4:00 am I
turned the light on and started working. I wrote 2 pages by 5:30 am, at
which time I needed to find another article on JStor. Anyone who has
used the JStor database knows how fickle it can be, and at 5:30 am, it
was literally making me sick. After 30 minutes of trying to find the
damn article, I gave up, and at 6:00 am I fell back asleep, until 7. At
Approx. 7:15 I turned the light back on and continued work on my essay,
which I thought was due at noon. I finished it by 9, and layed
miserably for 30 minutes until I HAD to get in the shower. I eventually
made my way to school around 10:30 am and arrived at school around
11:20 and proceeded to the computer lab. Of course, it took 15 minutes
to print because my 3 year old macbook needs a new hardrive and doesnt
fucking work. Dammnit. I got to class 30 minutes late, at 11:40 am. I
sat through the class, paper in hand, happy to be done with it, but
feeling lucid. A student be hind me asked a question about possible
resources for the essay. I thought to myself, "Well that was a stupid
question, isnt it a little late? The paper is due today." Then I
thought again, or is it? Once class ended, and I heard no mention of
turning papers in, I tapped the girl's shoulder in front of me, "Is the
essay not due today?". "No" she said, "Next Monday".

This New Orleans native, Damon Soule, fabricates a psychedelic cluster-fuck of loud colors and abstract images juxtaposed with recognizable symbols or objects to create a raucous cacophony that is sure to please the eye and ignite endless inspiration. He promises color, surrealism, and boxes galore for reasons even he cannot even name. In an interview with Trippe from Fecal Face, Soule says regarding the upcoming show, "Yeah... ummm. There seem to be a lot of squares. There is a piece about prime numbers and one about the golden ratio as it relates to nocturnal birds of prey. to be honest I'm not quite sure why. I was having these crazy dreams. it's kind of hard to explain but I was having multiple dreams at the same time but they were contained in these boxes and I was moving from dream to dream or box to box. It was very strange."

Raise The Bridges

May 9th

Weekender is a local Oakland band that cites their influences as "Oregon, Ohio, and California."  They recently recorded two of their songs, Simple and White Lighter, that set the pace for a fast, hard, and to the fucking point sound that keeps you on your toes, and likely thrashing into each other .  Weekender features hardcore breakdowns and melancholy lyrics seething with energy, fitting for a band that describes themselves as "People who drink beer and ride bikes playing music."  It will for sure be a throw down.

Photobucket
photo cred: from myspace.com/weekenderoakland

Raise the Bridges has more personality in it's littlest finger than most of you can hope to evoke in your entire lifetime.  Hailing from Oregon,  they have concocted one of the most unique amalgamations of genres I have listened to in a while in their barely two short years playing together since 2008.  They merge hip-hop, punk, hardcore, indie, reggae and ska to create a sound that has been described as "a party teetering dangerously on the edge of being out of control", or in short, it's effing Rock n'Roll. However, Raise the Bridges is not just about sex and drugs, this band spits purposeful lyrics that are meant to not only uplift and raise raucous, but are also intended to inspire and enlighten.  Its like Aesop Rock, Granola Funk Express and Against Me! met Sublime on the subway that got stuck going through a tube and they were so wired with creative energy that they created an album then and there about all the fucked up shit going on, good and bad.  Or its like a white kid with dreadlocks buying crack from a dealer in East Oakland, then cooking it up back in his mom's basement with all his hippie friends, chasing it with LSD, and subsequently reading the Bible.  Schitzophrenic, enlightened, amusing, and definitely fucking sick.

[MUSIC REVIEW] John Vanderslice

Please Visit Loudfarm.com, Your Bay Area Music Liason

Songwriter, photographer, world-traveler, studio owner, and musician are only a few faces of solo artist John Vanderslice who has forged a mini-empire in the mission district of San Francisco. Upon the break-up of MK Ultra in 1999, Vanderslice ventured out on his own to create an independent identity, and he wasted no time before releasing his first nationally recognized single Bill Gates Must Die in 2000. A wide influence base which references artists from Neutral Milk Hotel to Public Enemy contributes to his indiosyncratic sound and uniquely artistic vision. He is notorious for citing poetry, politics and film in his prolific narrative lyrics. Vanderslice's sound is an intermingling of indie words with meloncholy electronic notes, interspersed with cosmic moldies and 80's synth beats. It relishes in misery and woe yet invites the oppurtunity for discovery of uplifting inspiration. It's the type of music that makes you feel like its really listening.

[MUSIC REVIEW] Telekinesis

If the exclamation point at the end of their newly released album title Telekinesis! doesn't say it all for you, then let me let you in on a little known secret, this indie-rock band is as hip as it gets. David and Jonie Broekner, Chris Staples and Michael Benjamin Learner fuse electric guitar, electric bass, acoustic guitar and keyboards to create a classic, back country lullaby sound that will send you and your hipster friends into a tizzy of geek glasses and Polaroid pictures while knocking overfilled whiskey glasses in a cheers to "SF" in some dark dive-y space hidden in the mission. Even though they don't claim to actually have any sort of psychic power, they can definitely play a good song about road trips and love, which may make you think they know something about your life. Lump Telekinesis along with flannel and grunge into the "effing good things to come out of Seattle" category.

[MUSIC REVIEW] Juliette Comagere

Please Visit Loudfarm.com

This is not a feeling I am often gripped with, but immediately upon listening to the woefully artistic sounds of Juliette Commagere I am compelled to go straight to Amoeba and buy her new Album Queens Die Proudly. I will then proceed to listen to it incessantly until I can belt out every word to "Everything I Love" while sitting at home alone, laughing, crying, thinking, creating, and loving every second of being female. Juliette's adventurous pop-project propels her to the ranks of Alanis, Ani, Erykah and Kimya, women who have incredible talent and learned to use it in the most unique and progressive way possible. She is formerly known as the ketar-playing vocalist in Hello Stranger, her indie-rock band with high school sweetheart Joachim Cooder, but after a serious bout with depression that forced her to seek immortality in the form of creativity she found herself losing all inhibition and setting out on her own to make her mark, and make it she did. Queens Die Proudly has received wide-spread attention for it's compelling nature, beautiful sounds and artistic vision, and it goes without saying that Juliette herself is as beautiful as her music.

Surgical-mask chic: a hipster's guide

'Viral fashion' normally refers to an obscure trend that affords those in the know a chance to be snotty about the mainstream. And catwalk innovators and style luminaries have been all over the surgical mask like, well, a rash, for ages.

London-based designer Dr. Noki (real name JJ Hudson) has been wearing a face mask in public for over a decade now. "My mother detests it," he admits, "but it's an arresting image. It may not be attractive, but it's my own form of branding." Vogue calls both Hudson and his designs "apocalyptic"; in fact, it's fairly hard to tell him apart from his catwalk models, because he makes them all wear surgical masks too. "My favourite is a Spiderman one," he reveals, "customised from an old T-shirt.
"

Photobucket
Dr.Noki Spring/Summer 2008

Forget Michael Jackson - in Japan, where fear of pollution and hayfever have long driven mask sales, you can buy leopard print and even delicate lace masks. At this month's Japan Fashion Week, Mint Designs sent models out in masks moulded to the contours of their faces and covered in thorn prints. In Tokyo, it's impossible to tell the hipsters from the hypo-chondriacs, and where other countries have fresh-faced Pop Idols, the Japanese have the TV starlet Mask Idol, aka Anna Nakagawa, who is known for the incredible beauty of the upper two-thirds of her face.

So, ladies, though we might be doomed by a pandemic, don't let the side down; when wearing your mask, aim for inviting eyes glinting above a hidden, but luscious, pair of lips. Set them off with smoky eye make-up - just remember to use a tinted moisturiser, lest others mistake your interesting pallor for wan sickliness...

[MUSIC REVIEW] Asobi Seksu

Asobi Seksu is not just a NYC pop/shoegaze band, its also Japanese for "Fun Sex"! And honestly, they make me think of a good ole' hot, sweaty, 80's romp in the sack with their dance pop beats and Yuki Chikudate's dainty porcelein voice. What better thing can you possibly think to do on a Friday night than fun sex? None. GO SEE THEM!

[MUSIC REVIEW] M83

PLEASE VISIT LOUDFARM, YOUR BAY AREA MUSIC CONNECTION.

The work of a solitary artist, Anthony Gonzalez, is manifested as the French indie/electronic/shoegaze noises of M83. He flaunts a blatantly 80's synth sound juxtaposed with sultry whispered lyrics to create electronic dance beats that evoke a Boards of Canada meets Pat Benetar feel. M83 has been featured in two film trailers, the Russian flick "Night Watch" and the 2006 adaptation of "A Scanner, Darkly." He has also made appearance on and in the albums of various artists such as Bloc Party, The Deftones, and Snow Patrol. These collaborations have garnered moderate success and attention since M83's formation in 2001 and all five albums have been well-received by an increasingly larger audience. If you like pop/electro/indie/or just like to dance then this tripped out pop-culture sound is right up your alley.

Have you ever found a picture or a look that you just FEEL epitomizes you and what you are going for, conciously or subconsciously? This picture and quote are that for me; Girly with a tomboy twist. I can't say that I intentionally go for the tomboy look, nor do intentionally avoid looking girly, but who the hell can honestly WALK around all day in a pair of 5 inch heels? Maybe some of you die-hard fashion-istas with a car can, but my lifestyle of walk/BART/BUS just doesnt allow for it, therefore dresses and combats have become a new uniform for me. This also touches on those of us that don't do the black or die thing, granted today is an exception in my almost fully head to toe black ensemble, but on a regular basis I mix it up with lighter colors. I am not goth, and I am not uber-girly, I am an amALgamation. hm.

[MUSIC REVIEW] Kimya Dawson

Kimya Dawson, a prominent member of the anti-folk movement and one half the Moldy Peaches, made herself a household name (er, at least in indie circles) after the widespread attention received from their involvement on the soundtrack of the 2007 flick, "Juno". Her lo-fi acoustic sound and raspy catchy lyrics tell childish tales of love, heartbreak, and any other random topic imaginable from books to bicycles to roadtrips with a happy-go-lucky innocence. But beneath the surface naivate lurks the artistically soulful struggle for meaning, love, and carpe diem we all know so well, which is what keeps us interested and keeps us coming back for more. Dawson encapsulates and regurgitates a time, an era, and the feeling of our collective lives.
